What have I been up to, you ask.. well... I've been working on two series which complement each other. One depicting the levels of domestic violence (see image below) and the other, women celebrities (above).

Wow! I have an artist statement! Read it below, man...

I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. Whether it is as an illustrator, fine artist or designer, my role has always been to create pieces that are visually appealing. I utilize fabric and thread to produce images where contrast and patterns are predominant. My childhood and adolescence in The Caribbean gave place to a colorful style rich in shapes and simple visual poetry.

As my work has matured, I suddenly find myself interested in female anatomy and facial features. My pieces have become a tribute to women: their problems, their abuses and ultimately, their beauty. By portraying celebrities as well as the regular, everyday woman, my intention is to level the two in a way that enables the celebration of what they are (women) and not who they are.

By adding the flower element to my pieces I relate these two creatures as delicate and frail structures of mass and color that bring pleasure and beauty to the world.

rating: 5 of 5 stars
Waaaaaaaaaaoooooooo (a spanish wow)! Why did it take me so long to read this? I think I was intimidated with the length of the book. It's the perfect love story, not too mushy-douchy (twilight) or tedious (love in the time of cholera). It was simply perfecto and beautiful!

"SALVAGE - Reclaiming Recycling" call for entries (Posted: 2/11/09) -- The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania announces a call to artists for a national exhibition to be held September 10 - October 30, 2009. Awards: cash, merchandise, gift certificates. Juror: Claire Giblin. Open to all U.S. Residents 18 years of age and older. Artwork must be 100% re-used, salvaged, recycled material - art and non art, created within the last two years. $20 entry fee. Deadline: Midnight, May 1, 2009.

SCULPTURES

Over 80% of the materials used in the sculpture must be recovered, reused or recycled. Exceptions include glue, nails, adhesives and other materials needed to hold the sculpture together.

2 DIMENSIONAL ART

Over 80% of the materials used must be recovered, reused or recycled. Exceptions include glue, nails, adhesives and other materials needed to hold the piece together. Art must be ready to hang.

FUNCTIONAL ITEMS

For example: chairs, benches, tables, lamps, modes of transportation, clothing etc. The majority of materials used must be from recovered, reused or recycled materials.
Note: Furniture must be sturdy, safe and able to hold a 120 pound person.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographs of the following subjects may be submitted: garbage, discarded items, recyclable materials such as paper/metal/glass, ingenious uses of trash, the impacts of humans on environmental landscapes (including the impacts of man made trash as well as the impacts of the natural resource extractive industries). Works may also be composed of found and salvaged items.

VIDEO

Video submission clips may be no longer than 3 minutes and should contain one of the following themes: garbage, discarded items, ingenious uses of trash, recycling, the impacts of humans on environmental landscapes (including the impacts of man made trash as well as the impacts of the natural resource extractive industries). Works may also be composed of found and salvaged footage.

MUSIC

Music submissions may be no longer than 3 minutes and should be composed using instruments made from discarded items e.g. garbage cans, parts of old cars, oil drums, plastic bags, glass bottles etc. Works may also be composed of found and salvaged sounds.

HOW TO SUBMIT

All submissions (including required attachments) must be submitted by:
Midnight PST Friday May 1 2009

Send 'em to me. I'll recycle/reuse them for my holders.
It's the same plastic you get when you buy a bed sheet set (bendable, about the same thickness as card stock paper). Other products are packaged using this plastic as well so fear not!

No Plastic Bag Challenge!

I have recently found the Brooklyn Green Team blog, in it they have a challenge for the strong and mighty, the NO PLASTIC BAGS Challenge.
I accept their challenge, specially now that I'm going back home to the Dominican Republic were the word green only refers to palm tree tops. I will bring my reusable bags with me and give one to every family member I can. Hopefully I will not be laughed at as I kindly refuse a plastic bag from the cashier or bag boy (yes, there is a bag boy in every supermarket, in every open checkout line, he bags your grocery and brings it to your car and only gets payed in tips. So if you're ever in the DR, remember to tip the bag boy).
We'll see how my bag-less journey goes...
